Possible to add tags for searching PDF files?
I have a lot of magazine articles that I want to scan in PDF format and then be able to search thru them to find subjects that I have assigned to them.
Is it possible to add something like tags to the files that will allow me to find subject(s) that I have assigned to those files?
I have searched the forum for tags, but have not been able to find anything that references them, maybe there is some other term that I should be looking for, or maybe it's not possible?
Thanks,
Gary

Re: Possible to add tags for searching PDF files?
HI sailtime,
if your PDFs are scans they are likely image based. To make them 'searchable' you can use the OCR feature on them: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowled ... a-document
Or you can add bookmarks and links within the documents. The process for doing this is in the manual. Help --> Contents.
You could also add 'keywords' in the document properties (CTRL+D) - these will return in searches either through the Viewer or the Windows Search using the iFilter that is installed by default when you install the Viewer.

Re: Possible to add tags for searching PDF files?
Hi Paul,
I have tried your suggestions and find that the OCR will return all words in the document without any problems, but I am not able to get the key word and bookmark to work the same way.
I would prefer to add my own words (keywords) so it would filter documents better than allowing all documents with the same word to show.
I tried the bookmark function, but the word I inserted does not show when I go to Start and type in that word.
I have used the control D function, but the word I inserted does not show when I go to Start and type in that word.
I'm using a vista machine for this. What am I missing?
Thanks for the help,
G

Re: Possible to add tags for searching PDF files?
HI sailtime,
thanks for the feedback. I'm pleased that the OCR is working.
You might also want to look at your Indexing Options int he Windows Control Panel and set the target folder to be indexed.

This is intended as a way of quickly accessing the page from within the document. Bookmark Titles are the only attribute of a Bookmark that will show in a search. Is it the Title of the bookmark you were searching for? This should work.I tried the bookmark function, but the word I inserted does not show when I go to Start and type in that word.
Adding keywords to the PDF should result in the file being found. Can you check the document properties bith in the Viewer and using Windows Explorer to check that the keyword is listed?I have used the control D function, but the word I inserted does not show when I go to Start and type in that word.

Dear Paul,
The CONTROL > D option clearly works -- but, only for a single file.
How would I enter a Keyword for multiple files?
Thanks!

Hi mwidunn,
Thanks for the post - This can be done in the latest release of PDF-Tools, by creating a custom tool that asks for source files, changes doc. properties, then saves the files:
PDF-Tools can be downloaded and tested for free here:

Re: Possible to add tags for searching PDF files?
Thank you . . . but, how do I do this?
I've downloaded and installed the Tool. After that, I'm completely at a loss as to how to create a custom tool.
I've looked at the picture without any further elucidation.
Could you, please, explain some more?
Thanks.

Hello mwidunn,
Please click on the 'Create' button:
You can then drag/drop actions to create the functions of the tool.
I hope this helps!

Thanks.
I'll have to buy it, though, since I don't want the watermark.
But -- yes -- I've figured out how to create the tool.
Thanks again!
