Small thumbnails in Windows 10?

Post by xyzzy1 »

Hi,

I'm a big fan of PDF-XChange Viewer :D

I've just got a new laptop with Windows 10 on it & have noticed this oddity with PDF-XChange Viewer installed, PDFs associated to it, and viewing icons as thumbnails in Windows Explorer...

Image

As you can see, most thumbnails display fine, but some are really tiny. This is affecting maybe 10-20% of all PDF files. Changing the filename fixes it but when you change it back it becomes small again. Deleting the file, clearing the icon & thumbnail cache then replacing the file with a fresh copy has no effect.

I wonder if it's something to do with Microsoft Edge (which I don't use), which PDFs were originally associated with?

Any ideas how to fix?

Thanks :)

Hello xyzzy1,
Thank you for the post and welcome to our forums! This is some odd behaviour. Please post some of these files with tiny thumbnails as well as one that works correctly (as a control) so that we can test this here.

Thank you!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Cheers,

It is a very strange phenomenon, and I think it is Windows related (so not due to PDF-XChange or anything else).

The following trick helped at my side. Just try it out, starting with one file, to check if it has the same effect at your side:
- copy the file with a too small icon towards another folder
(in that other folder, it should show correctly)
- delete the concerning file in the original location
- copy the copied-file back to its original location

Good luck.

Please xyzzy1, do us a favor, and let us know if this helps for you (or not).
:-)

HI,

OK I've attached a file containing Warlock 11 which is normal & Warlock 12 which is tiny. It's funny right clicking on the thumbnail will often refresh it to it's normal sizem but when you come back to that folder later it's small again.

Moving the files about sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. It's weird.

Thanks for your welcome & suggestions :)

Attachment in zip format, though it doesn't appear to show.

@xyzzy1

1) Did you wonder why I talked about COPY and NOT MOVE ?

I suppose that Windows assigns a unique ID to every object that it needs to display.
So when you move an object, it keeps its ID. When you copy, it gets a new ID.
In this last case, there is a lot of chance to resolve caching problems. In the first case (via move), it is almost nihil.

2) When you attach files to a post for this forum, you must not only 'attach' but also 'upload' the file.

Best regards, and please follow the steps that I explained, 'literally'.

Hi guys,

I believe that this is a Windows issue. Please try clearing the Thumbnails cache:

Thanks,
