PDF'S WILL NOT OPEN IN BROWSER

Post by srackley »

I have a 64 bit PC running Windows 7 Enterprise N – SP1, IE 11 Ver 11.0.9600.17843IS, and PDF Xchange 5.5. I cannot get my pdf documents to open with PDF Xchange in the IE browser. Each time I click on a link to a PDF, a blank window pops up and it looks like the pdf is going to open in the browser, and then it opens up in another window external to the browser. This problem began when the user installed Adobe Air. I have uninstalled Adobe Air, uninstalled and reinstalled IE11, uninstalled and reinstalled PDF Xchange 5.5, and tried PDF Xchange 6.0. I have checked the IE 11 add-ins and disabled and re-enabled the PDF Xchange add-ins several times. :( :( :(

Does anyone have any ideas?

In PDF-XChange Editor, via Edit > Preferences > File Associations > at "View PDF files in Internet Explorer", select "Yes" and click "Apply" (the button at the very bottom of the window). Confirm with "Yes". Close the window by clicking "OK".

Does this help?

Hi srackley

it is getting harder by the day to set file and mime type associations programatically in Windows. This is a deliberate attempt by Microsoft to "keep people safe" by forcing user interaction to set preferences. Unfortunately there are sometimes down sides to this, including it not always setting associations as expected.

The first thing to try is the settings within the Editor itself.

Edit --> Preferences --> File Associations --> View PDF Files in Internet Explorer --> Yes

If that fails to stick you can try setting the registry keys yourself:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"Extension"=".pdf"
"CLSID"="{53719C00-353D-4FCF-A8AB-1B1027B60A49}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"CLSID"="{53719C00-353D-4FCF-A8AB-1B1027B60A49}"
"Extension"=".pdf"
I hope that helps.
Best regards

I have already tried editing the file associations without success. Sorry, I forgot to include that in my post. Thank you.

What about setting the reg keys directly? I could send you a reg file that you just double click to apply but most email programs will block that.

If you copy my reg text into a text file and save it with the extension .reg you can apply the keys that way.

Do you need help applying those keys?

I will try setting the registry myself. I copied the text exactly as below and named the file with the .reg extension as you instructed...bni registry edits.reg

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"Extension"=".pdf"
"CLSID"="{53719C00-353D-4FCF-A8AB-1B1027B60A49}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"CLSID"="{53719C00-353D-4FCF-A8AB-1B1027B60A49}"
"Extension"=".pdf"

Do I need to make sure that I am using Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00, or do I need to include that statement in the .reg file?

Thanks, Paul

Hi srackley,

yes you will need that line in there. It won't work without it. Version 5.0 was XP. Putting that line in there will make it work on any version of Windows from XP onwards.

Any result on the last test?

I have the same problem, I just have Windows 10.
Before Anniversary update all worked fine.
In anniversary update I made clean install and had to reinstall PDF Editor.
Since then, I have not been able to open pdf-files in browser.

Hi Timo,

Thanks for the post - have you tried the suggestions above? If not, please do try them. If you have, please let us know.

However, upon investigation it appears that this may be a Windows issue (although we're note certain yet) and the fact that this worked before the Anniversary Update further indicates the same.

Also, on a sidenote, it may be worth noting that Microsoft's Anniversary Update is not a stable update and may cause problems other than those lsited by Microsoft:

I have tried the suggestions above.
In addition to that, I have also tried probably all other suggestions I have found, uninstalled/reinstalled PDF editor, etc.

I don't know if this is of any value, but in my case with IE11, PDF Editor add-on is not listed under "All add-ons", but under "Run without permissions".

I had similar problems and also could not associate pdfxhcange with the .pdf extension in windows (7 enterprise)

the settings within PDFXc solved this, perhaps it should be able to set it as the default programme using windows default programmes as well as though the settings itself

Between Windows 7 and 10 there have been incremental changes to how M$ require this association to be set.

Win10 is the most restrictive version yet and it is here that we are seeing the worst of this.

tm8544 - when you say "I have tried the suggestions above." does that include explicitly setting those registry keys? And it still didn't work?

First I checked my registry for those values, they were correct.
Then, just to be sure, I set those values using the reg-file given above.
It did not work.

I have no problem with file association in general, only with opening pdf in IE11. I have not tried other browsers, e.g. chrome.

Hi tm8544,

Thanks for the info. - other browsers require a different type of plugin and Chrome and Opera both no longer support NPAPI plugins at all, so these instructions will not work for them. For more info. on Chrome, Opera and Firefox, please see here:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowled ... in-browser

Regarding IE - purely as a test, can you please try setting Adobe as the defualt to display PDF files in IE and advise on the results?

Thanks,

I installed latest PDF Reader from Adobe site.
After installation, I restarted my laptop and tested.
Pdf-files were not displayed in IE11 browser.

Then I disabled PDF-Editor add-on from "Run without permissions" category.
After that, Adobe Reader shows pdf-files in IE11 browser.

Adobe Reader add-on is listed in "All add-ons" category.

Thanks for doing this tm8544,

we are struggling, as you can see to nail down exactly what is happening here. As Will mentioned there have been a lot of changes to the whole plugin concept let alone it's implementation.

We are very busy right now finalising build 318 and the developers will not have a chance to look any further into this until after that release next week.

I would ask you to indulge us with a little patience and wait until after 318 is released for the work needed here.

sincerely

Paul

Greetings,
Wondering if there was any more discovery on viewing PDF in IE11 since the rollout of Build 318. Switching preferences off and on, or setting registry entries :?: has not resolved the issue on Win 7 E 64-bit. :?:

Can you please check if you have the following entry in the registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\MIMEAssociations\application/pdf

on the computer where the problem exists. If yes, can you please export it and send us?
Than you can delete it and check if that helps to solve the problem (you will have to reopen IE)

When attaching files to any message - please ensure they are archived and posted as a .ZIP, .RAR or .7z format - or they will not be posted - thanks.

I tested this and after deleting the registry key, PDF's started to open in browser. At least in my case, problem solved. :D
