Accurate way for adding background

Post by marcin19545 »

As gis specialist i often use feature of adding background to base map.
It have be done accurately, so i look for common points on base map and layer, then write down (on paper) XY coordinates (presented on left side of status bar)
then i compute differences (dx,dy) and type it into proper fileld of add background dialogform.

I think it would be usefull if pdf-xchane could "remember" displacement vector. Something like "use measured displacement" in add background dialogform and corresponding button "measure displacement" in toolbox.

Maybe somebody know if there is another (simple) way to overlay two pdf pages without manual computing differences of page coordinates.

Hello marcin19545,

Can you please show us some sample file before and after - so that we can get a better understanding of the desired result, and we will then be happy to advise if there's an easier way to achieve this!

Hello,

1) If it goes about saving the settings ...
At the bottom left of the "Add background" dialog box there is an option to save the current settings.
(Document-menu > Background > Add)
Isn't that useful ?

2) If it goes about calculating the horizontal and vertical difference between a specific reference point on both layers ...
An alternative could be, after adding the background, use the "Edit content" feature. Once that the background-page is selected, you can play with the cursor keys to move it. I suppose by modifying settings in the "Measurement" preferences, one can make the steps of the displacement smaller or larger.

Best regards.

Thanks a lot

i have to know accurate differences between a specific reference point on both layers.
Preview window in edit background dialogbox is far too smal.

I thought about a function that could have store in memory "measured" differences between two points placed on different layers and which allow to pass these values into proper fields of background dialogbox (so there is no need to compute it manually, in addition any mouse movement can bring mistake)

In attached file my way of achieving this goal:

Hello Marcin,

You can expand the background preview window to full screen - and this should give you much more detail!
But then again - entering the coordinates as exact values will still give you the higher precision!
Unfortunately there's no way to "store" those values in the end user Editor.
If you ware e.g. programming a solution using the SDK packages - those can certainly be computed properly in the background, but using the interface of the Editor - it will have to go the way you've outlined in your file.

Thanks,

and what You thinking about displaying widith abd height of rectangle bounding selected object in status bar or in properties pane?

Usually adding background is simply displacement without rotations.

What about drawing line between corresponding points then selecting that line - widith and height of box bounding that line is simply coordinate differences - to be typed in proper box of adding background dialogform.

If it would be displayed on the status bar next to XY position of cursor or in properties pane (there it could be editable - causing transformation of selected object) it would be enough for me.

BTW: With "Edit content" button i can move and rotate all document. Is there a way to input accurate values of shift and rotation?

I mean i can move and rotate object using mouse, rotation value is even displayed but there is no way to enter these values manually from keyboard.

Hello Marcin,

I am afraid that such an auto calculation of displacement feature is quite niche - and is unlikely to be implemented.
As for the fine control over objects - please try (with an active selectiong) the Main Menu -> Object -> Transform Selection menu.
