OCR result, help file

Post by AlbrechtMehl »

1. I OCR'ed a document using the option ' Conserve content and add text plane'. The process worked
apperently alright; there was no error message. BUT I could not find in all the menues a button
how to get the text plane. So I would be glad to get information on how to get the text plane so that
it can be saved as a file.

2. When pressing F1 for help I do not get an embedded help but rather a browser window is
opened.

Is there no embedded help?

Hi AlbrechtMehl,

Thanks for the post.

OCR text can be selected, copied/pasted, edited, etc. using exactly the same means as any other text: the Select Text tool, the Edit Content tool, and the Content Pane:

As with most modern applications, we do not offer embedded help, only our online manuals. You can download a PDF manual for each product on the Welcome page of each manual:

HTH!

Dear Will,

thank you very much for your speedy reply. There is one problem left.

Following your advice I managed to get the ocr'd text after having deleted the original image. But then I do not know further. I would like to save this result as a .txt file or the get parts of it by copying (ctrl c). Neither I can do, so for another helping hand I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance

Hi Albrecht,

Not a problem! You can save the file as *.txt file using File --> Save As --> Plain Text:

Hi Will,

apparently my IQ is not sufficient: I cannot save the text layer as a .txt file:

1. On the left side there is a panel with the correct name of the text. Within Inhalt (content),
then Seite 1 (page 1), then 'Text' and the text follows in one long line

2. I mark 'Text' which gets coloured. The actual text in the middle of the monitor
gets a blue frame with 6 yellow dots

3. I go to Datei > speichern unter (file, save as)
the usual file selection window opens

4. BUT within the field for Dateityp (file type) there is just
- pdf Dokument
- MS Power Point presentation
- pdf/A Document
There is no plain text as in the picture you have included in your post.

What is my mistake?

Thank you in advance

Hi Albrecht,

The most likely cause is that you're using an older release. Please update to Verison 6 Build 322.6 and see if that helps:

Hi Timur,

That particular medium of help has been done away with for a number of reasons. Primary amongst them are that they increase the size of the installers and installed application significantly and, given that most people have internet connections of access to a PC with internet, it's an unnecessary bloating.

This is most definitely not something we're going to add again, as it would require a significant amount of work for very little benefit to very few people.

The biggest CHM helpfile in my programs folder is 20 mb in size. Modern installers come as a small stub file and then allow the user to chose which parts to download and install. ;)

No worries Albrecht :D

Timur - This is still not something that we would be interested in doing. This has been discussed in the past and the conclusion then was the same as now: it requires a lot of work for little to no gain. Most users that actually read the manuals/help content prefer either online help content, or PDF manuals such as those we offer. However, I would wager that most users do not actually read the manuals, but instead prefer to contact us directly or post on our forums (speaking from ~5years of tech. support experience).

I still miss the easy way of just hitting F1 from inside a dialog window to get a direct overview/explanation of what I am currently looking at. In Editor's Print dialog I can hit F1 all day long or try mouse-overs and will get nothing in return. Then I have to leave the dialog to go to the help menu (or hit F1 once I closed the dialog). Then I have to search through the online help to find the relevant information for the print dialog and its sub-options. Then I get a "No results found.".

No one can tell me that this is the better way of doing help, I don't buy it! Editor should at least offer mouse-over help. These are things that worked well in the past of Windows programs, omitting them is not a service to the customers. Anyway, it is what it is, but it surely is not convenient.

Hi Timur,

Mouse-over help is a different story and has been discussed here before. If I remember right, it's something that wasn't ruled out, but given the amount of work required and that we do already have help available in the form of online/PDF manuals, Knowledgebase articles and tech support, we cannot prioritize that over other things at the moment.

The fact is that there are already a ton of outstanding, reasonable requests that we intend to implement, but it all takes time. It's a constant balancing act of how long it will take, how highly requested it is, how useful it is, and how complex it is.

Adding that just isn't something we can commit to at the moment.
