Run OCR as a windows service

Post by magriii »

Hi,
I'd like to automatically ocr all PDF scans that are produced by a scanner.
I would prefer if this can be done via a windows service that monitors a folder.

My ideal workflow would run these steps for newly detected files from a source folder
1. Straighten/align the scan
2. Autorotate if necessary
3. OCR
4. move original file to archive folder
5. create a searchable PDF in a destination folder

Is the whole workflow or parts of the workflow possible with the PDF Tools or any other tracker product?

thanks for any help

Hi magriii,

Thanks for the post - I'm afraid that we don't offer any such feature at this time, but if you scan using the Editor or PDF-Tools, you can set both up to automatically deskew, despeckle and OCR the newly scanned documents.

For example, in the Editor this can be done under File --> New Document --> From Scanner --> Image Insertion Options --> Image Post Processing.

Thanks,
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Best regards

In the PDF-Tools product, for the "Folder Monitors" function to work, does a user have to be logged in and PDF-Tools running, or can this be used on a file server to monitor a folders?

Hello Spiral,

Generally speaking, Tools needs to be running on an logged in user for folder monitors to work, yes. If your file server is windows based, (Server 2012 R2 as an example) then tools can run natively on the system and you would be able to do this.

With that being said, our licensing is user based, not device based, so if tools is to be used in any environment with multiple users (whether it is run locally on your machine, or on the server), your PDF-Tools license must cover all users who have access to the application, or any of its features. This means that whether your PC, or the server itself, is handling processing the files from the server, that company employees or other users are uploading to it, you must have a volume license that covers all those users simultaneously.

I hope this helps!

Hi Spiral,
you may check the software AutoOCR.
We use it since 2 years without any issues.
