Bug report: Problem pdf'ing EPS graphics in MSWord

Post by BobM »

The attached Word 2010 document contains 2 EPS images (produced in Adobe Illustrator). When the document is pdf'd using the PDFXchange ribbon icon, letters containing curves are corrupted in the resultant graphic. The same occurs using the PDFX print driver. See attachment.
The Acrobat 9 and CutePDF print drivers correctly render the text in the images.

Bob,

I am probably being incredibly stupid - but I dont see a problem in the PDF created by PDF-XChange - can you point me to the issue in the PDF file - it looks a perfectly good representation of the content of the word file attached ?
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

No its not obvious at normal size, but when zoomed in, the effect becomes apparent. The curves in O are replaced with straight lines, whilst the S looks like chunks have been bitten out of it.
The problem also becomes visible when these images are printed large, eg A0 size.
Vector images should be a perfect rendition of the original, regardless of the magnification. The true type font used for the phrase "Start typing here" below the images displays correctly at all zoom levels - the image text should do likewise.

Understood - thanks ...

Please take a look at the attached and advise if you agree if this is better - I suspect the issue is one we cannot resolve in the existing Version of the driver as it relies on the Windows GDI to render the PDF - Version 5 due at the end of the month no longer relies on the Windows GDI and the attached was created using a Beta version.

Slightly better but still unacceptable - the curves should be perfect, ie no straight edges.
I assume the two tone colour is an anomaly associated with the beta.

I am afraid EPS is not natively supported and as we are not a postscript output device we cannot offer the option you appear to need in this instance.

The only solution I can suggest is you convert the image to another suitable non-postscript format such as PNG or JPG which will rsolve the issue itself as a workaround.

Sorry in this instance we could not help more at this time.

Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, it means that PDFXchange is unsuitable for pdf'ing most of our documents, since many of them contain embedded EPS objects.

PNG or JPG formats are not an alternative as they bitmap formats rather than vector, and pixellate when enlarged.

No need to post it as such Bob - its a techincal limitation - not a bug.
