Hi Is there a way to make a text field that only takes one character and automatically moves to the next field?
for example to enter id number 54321 in multiple side-by-side boxes without having to type: 5 *TAB* 4 *TAB* 3 *TAB* 2 *TAB* 1

not quite like that no, but if you are looking to have a delimited area like this, form fields natively allow this on their own, simply enable the "comb" function, and define a character limit, this will accomplish the "side-by-side" appearance you are looking for:
