Why the need to resave Word doc after conversion?

When the conversion of a Word 2007 document is complete I have to resave the Word document before I can close it.

Is this usual? What changes have been made to the Word version?

Actually there is no need to resave Word document. During the conversion process some changes are made to the document to support the enhanced features, but they are all discarded at the end of conversion.
