JBIG2 compression options explained

Knowledge Base Article: KB188 - Created On: Sep 4, 2009 12:30 PM - Last Modified: May 2, 2012 06:23 AM

Question

What is each of the available options for JBIG2 compression doing (Standard, Crop Borders and Symbols)?

Resolution

Those option's names are originating from the way JBIG2 works, so here is a short explanation for each:

Standard - image is compressed using only the generic JBIG region.

Crop Borders - we are locating any white borders on an image and excluding them from the compression and Symbols is our implementation of a method similar to the ones described in the "Text image data" section of this wiki article.

All of the settings described above are using loss-less compression algorithms.
