I feel that the size of the PDF document I have created is to big. How can I create smaller file sizes?
PDF-XChange is very efficient at creating small PDF documents with it's default settings. Some content does not compress as well as others, especially images. It is always a trade off when doing compression between size and quality. The default settings are what we consider to be a good balance between these.
There are controls available to change the aggressiveness of the compression used and there are a number of things that can be 'tweaked' in order to create smaller files. There are 2 'Categories' in the Print Driver Printing Preferences you can look at: first: 'Compression' and 'Graphics'. It is in the compression of images that the greatest file size reduction is typically found.
Compression
Try setting your JPG Quality to 50% as in this screen shot

Graphics
and in the Graphics category try Bicubic Downsampling as in this screen shot:

Doing this alone for example I managed to reduce a file I was creating by 58% with what I consider acceptable loss in image quality.
Remember that it is always a trade off between compression/file size and quality and there really is no magic solution for all documents other than trying different settings and seeing which give the balance that you like best.
