OCR fails/errors when dpi is 300 and PDF is large

Post by whoit »

I've found that if I try to OCR a large format file (E size, D size, etc) at 300 dpi, it fails.
However, the same files is successful when the dpi is set to 200.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Is there a minimum dpi setting that is accurate?
In other words, after a certain DPI setting is there nothing gained during OCR?

Can you please test the Editor OCR option and advise if this performs as required on your doc's specifically ?

this can be done using the free version ...

Thanks

Hi John -

Yes, I've actually tried that already and found the same results.
In fact, I first noticed it when testing using the Free viewer: v2.5 build313.1

Hi whoit,

Is the test run on a 32 bit machine? Could you be hitting the 2GB memory limit?
Have you kept an eye on memory usage while trying to run the OCR?

Stefan

For now you will need to keep the DPI at either a reduced limit on a case by case basis - and/or consider dividing the image into 2 or more parts prior to attempting to OCR ..

I will discuss with our project team what we can do as an option directly within the Editor to avoid such issues and implementing a more 'intelligent' automated solution in a future build.

Hi Stefan -

Ok, I don't know what's going on here but I just tried OCRing the same files as before, at 300 dpi, at 600 DPI, and leaving the native layer alone.

Didn't have any problems at all with any of the three tests.

I'm on Windows 7 Pro 64bit

Memory maxed out around 2.8gb when I used 600 dpi, so no issues there.

Can we keep this thread open in case my colleagues want to jump in with more testing?

Hi whoit,

I'm glad to hear it seems to be working fine now.

We don't have any ticketing system for general support queries, only bug tracking, so if you did see the issue resurface or your colleagues have any further issues that would help us troubleshoot, then please do let us know and we'll keep digging.

Cheers,
