What does the asterisk mean under the Settings tab?

Post by StefanS »

In the PDF X-Change Word Addin there is sometimes an asterisk appearing in the Settings tab, see screenshot attached. What does that symbol mean?
Background of my question is that sometimes there is mismatch in the selected profile and the actual applied profile to the generated pdf. May be it has to do with that mysterious asterisk...
Any explanation is very much appreciated.
Thank you.
Best regards
StefanS

Hello, StefanS

That asterisk should mean that unsaved changes have been made to the selected profile. Note that simply opening the settings menu and clicking "ok" is enough to make this function "think" that a change was made, even if you left the settings unchanged when doing so.

Thanks for the answer.
Unfortunately, I can't get rid of the asterisk.
I go to <Save Profile as> and allow to override the existing profile - it doesn't help.
Would could I do next?

Working with the latest pdf-xchange version 10.1.2

Hello StefanS,

I did double check this and saving and overriding the profile seems to be working correctly with the asterisk:

If you are experiencing a different outcome please let us know, and please do check and share with us the version of Word used on your end.

Kind regards,
Jordan.

Hello, StefanS

I cannot seem to reproduce the issue on this end. Creating a new profile does automatically select that profile, and in turn removes the star. In any case, the Star is simply meant to indicate that you have made changes, or reviewed the settings for that profile, so it is not in any way detrimental to the conversion if it is visible.

Thanks for the response.
The problem with the asterisk is slightly deeper because I can't be sure that the selected profile will be used. For example, I select profile A (draft version with low resolution and watermark) and profile B (final version with high resolution and without watermark) is applied. This is very inefficient for my work and risks releasing incorrect pdf documents.
I have assumed that the asterisk also plays a role here.

Hello, StefanS

If you want to be very sure that the correct profile is being used, and get rid of the asterisk, you can simply select a different profile, and then re-select the one you do wish to print with. That will ensure that you are loading that particular profiles settings.
The profile shown beside the asterisk is the one which was modified, while the asterisk itself indicates that any change at all has been made to this profile. to undo that change, you simply need to reload the profile.
