I can't change the default text style in the Typewriter or Text Box Tools.
Default text properties for objects is typically saved independently of other object properties.
To set the default text style on an object:

As of Version 2.0.0050.0 the currently selected style can be made the default with a single click of the new button"Make Default' that appears on the "Properties Toolbar [CTRL+E]" when your text is selected.

1) Select the desired text to be changed. Note that this typically requites selecting an object then double clicking inside that object to give the text focus, then using the mouse or keyboard to select the text you wish to modify.

Some users have mentioned challenges in this step, citing difficulty selecting the text and have found it useful to zoom in on the object in question to make selecting the text inside easier.
2) Modify the text appearance using the context sensitive properties toolbar.

3) Once you have the text looking the way you want it, select that text again, then using the context menu [right click] select Text Formatting>Set Current Text Formatting as Default.
